So the grammy nominations came out last week and aside from the multitude of comments saying the Weeknd got snubbed, I have also seen the name Rina Sawayama appear several times as having had the same done to. And that's how I discovered this awesome artist.. Just kinda disappointed I didn't discover her earlier. I can't say that without sounding like a wanna be hipster :)
I mean her songs are bangers, diverse in genres, and substantive in meaning and material. I've been going through her discography in the past few days and not only is her album Sawayama a collection of rich, thoughtful and melodic tunes, but her earlier work which includes songs such as 'Cyber Stockholm Syndrome', 'Where U are' and 'Cherry' are iconic pop songs that honestly should garner way more attention.
Aside from just being a fundamentally sound artist, she represents to me all the positives of my/ millennial generation- pure artistry, barrier-breaking, hard working, conscientious, raising of environmental and social awareness.
